Ingredients Glossary
AIM is committed to keeping every product we produce as “close to nature” as possible. We have maintained our commitment with these products. You will notice a broad range of natural, botanical components in dailyLife™ products. To preserve the purity and efficacy of the products over time, we have included a minimal amount of preservatives (less than 1percent of any product formula).
We believe all consumers have the right to choose carefully what they put in and on their body. Therefore, we have included this information on our dailyLife™ product ingredients to allow you to make a fully informed decision when choosing to use the dailyLife™ products.
Water
Our water is taken from an Artesian well located on the property where the products are produced. The water goes through an extensive purification process, including carbon filters, reverse osmosis and UV light, to ensure absolute purity. Because our products are so effectively absorbed, we are careful that the water your skin and hair is absorbing is safe and pure.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
Used in many personal care products around the globe, sodium laureth sulfate is most used as a foaming agent. There is no evidence of harm from the use of either sodium lauryl sulfate SLS or SLES as used in cosmetic products. Both ingredients were reviewed in 1983 by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel and found to be safe. Also Health Canada considers SLS and SLES safe for use in cosmetics. However SLS is not as harmless as SLES. Sodium lauryl sulfate can cause skin and eye irritation and can cause dermatitis with prolonged contact.
Cocamidopropyl Betaine
Derived primarily from coconut oil, cocamidopropyl betaine is used in many natural skin and hair care products as a surfactant – reducing the surface tension of the liquids allowing for a richer foam and deeper penetration of nutrients.
Cocamide MEA
Taken from the fatty acids of coconut oil, this element is used as a foaming agent.
Lauryl Polyglucose
Considered an environmentally friendly component, lauryl polyglucose is derived from palm kernel oil and corn starch. It is known as a gentle antiseptic cleanser and also contributes to a pleasant foaming action.
Aloe Barbardenis Leaf Juice
Historically, aloe has been used topically for burns, inflammation, and other types of wound healing. Aloe barbadensis has a unique ability to penetrate the skin’s surface deeply (up to seven layers) to bring its soothing anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties to the deepest cellular level. This intense penetration promotes restoration of tissue from the inside out while allowing hydration of the skin. Aloe’s pH is very close to our skin’s pH helping to restore or retain healthy pH in the skin and scalp.
Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D-3)
This form of vitamin D is absorbed into the skin.
D-Panthenol or Provitamin B5
This powerful provitamin is extremely effective in ensuring proper hydration of hair and skin. As a humectant, it draws moisture from the air and into the skin. It is known to help restore collagen and skin elasticity, and becomes an enzyme which can help with wound healing. Provitamin B5 is especially helpful in hair treatment because it coats the hair and opens the follicles allowing for deeper nourishment and shinier hair.
Glycerin
Glycerin is a key ingredient in dailyLife™ skin care products. Derived from a vegetable source, our glycerin balances the water in the skin. As a humectant, it draws water from the air and has a deeply hydrating effect restoring moisture balance and smooth, soft skin. It is especially gentle for those with sensitive skin.
Note: It was once thought that the same action that causes glycerin to draw water from the air would cause it to draw water out of the skin. This has been proven to be false. Glycerin maintains balance, but does not dehydrate the skin.
Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom Salt)
Epsom salt is known for its solubility and promotes the absorption of the essential mineral magnesium.
Ricinus Communis (Castor) Oil
Extracted from the castor seeds, Castor oil is used as an emulsifier (helping to blend elements that are not soluble). It has also demonstrated “antipruritic” properties, that is, it helps to alleviate itching in the skin and scalp.
Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A)
As a form of vitamin A, studies have shown retinyl palmitate can lead to more youthful skin as it replenishes the retinol (another form of vitamin A) in the skin and enhances deep hydration.
Silk Amino Acids
These amino acids from silk contribute to the soft, silky feel of your skin. Their excellent water-binding properties help to prevent dehydration.
Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
The powerful antioxidant properties of this fat-soluble vitamin allow it to help protect the skin and scalp from damage and also enhance rapid skin repair. Vitamin E is known to be instrumental in alleviating dry skin, and speeding healing from lesions, abrasions and burns. It has also been observed to help in diminishing scarring from injury or surgery.
Citric Acid
Citric acid can be derived from a number of citrus fruits such as limes, lemons, and grapefruit. Although citric acid has many purposes, we use it in dailyLife™ products as a natural preservative.
Chlorophenesin
An anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent, chlorophenesin is an effective broad spectrum preservative.
Dimethicone Copolyol
A complex of natural silica, this component serves several functions. It acts as a spreading agent for smooth application, moisturizes and functions as a microbial, fighting bacteria.
Glycol DIstearate
Produced from stearic acid and derived from a vegetable source, glycol stearate is used for effective flow of our liquid products giving them that pearly look and feel.
Guar Hydrocypropyltrimonium Chloride
This derivative of natural guar gum promotes smoothness and volume in hair.
Oleanolic Acid
This phytochemical (found in raisins and other plant sources) is valuable in supporting the texture and oil balance of the skin and hair as well as demonstrating anti-fungal and antioxidant properties. Our oleanolic acid is derived from plant sources.
PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil
A derivative of hydrogenated castor oil, this compound contributes to the ability of certain ingredients to be dissolved and reduces the surface tension of the liquid allowing more thorough absorption of nutrients.
Butylene Glycol
An organic molecule, butylene glycol serves two functions. It is an emollient and humectant, meaning it helps to absorb moisture into the skin making it softer and smoother. Butylene glycol is also a mild mold-inhibiter.
Phenoxyethanol
This organic chemical compound is valuable as an anti-microbial component in our dailyLife™ products.
Polyquaterium-7
This polymer is often used as a water-soluble thickener.
PPG-26-Buteth-26
This compound helps to reduce the surface tension of the product allowing for better absorption of nutrients.
Sorbic Acid
A natural, organic compound, sorbic acid has demonstrated antimicrobial abilities, helping to prevent the growth of mold, yeast and fungi. This preservative helps keep products exposed to air and skin contaminants free of pathogens.
PEG-7 Glycerol Cocoate
Produced from glycerin and coconut oil, this agent serves many purposes in our products. It is an excellent emulsifier (blending non-soluble components) and emollient, promoting moisturization for soft smooth skin. As a surfactant, it reduces the surface tension of liquids helping to produce a pleasant foaming action.
Apigenin
Apigenin, considered a non-mutagenic bioflavonoid, is found in leafy vegetables such as parsley, celery, artichoke and basil. As a flavone (subcategory of flavonoids), apigenin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Biotinyl Tripeptide-1
A tripeptide-1 is a specialized synthetic molecule containing three amino acid residues – glycerine, histidine and lysine, and is considered a protein derivative. It is used frequently as a skin-conditioning agent for its role in building and preventing the breakdown of collagen. Biotin is a B vitamin essential for cellular growth in the body, as well as the activity of many enzyme systems. It is an ingredient commonly found in many dermatologist-recommended hair loss treatments for its key role in the manufacturing of healthy hair.
Ethylhydroxyethyl Cellulose
A natural thickening agent derived from wood pulp and fiber, this compound provides body to the gel and aids in controlling individual hair sections while rolling curls or styling.
Benzoic Acid
Derived originally from the resin of the gum benzoin tree, benzoic acid is the simplest carboxylic acid. Found naturally in many plants, including cranberries and plums, benzoic acid and its salts are often used as a food preservative. It inhibits the growth of mold, yeast and some bacteria.
Tetrasodium EDTA (ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid)
A type of amino acid, tetrasodium EDTA is used as a stabilizer in our products. Due to its chelating action, EDTA helps to keep ingredients from binding to elements that may change the nature of their activity in the formula, thus stabilizing the product so that texture and function remain over time.
Food Colorings
Only seven artificial colorings are permitted in food in the US. In dailyLife™ products, the colorings Blue No.1, Red No. 40, Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6 are recognized as safe for foods and therefore very safe in topical applications. Orange No. 4 is listed as safe for topical application.
